HVAC
It is eleven at night in August and their air just died.
Whoever answers that call does the job. It is worth hundreds, it will not wait until morning, and it is the least price-sensitive customer you will get all week.
Built and run by one person, here in Tulsa. Not a call centre.
What actually goes wrong
Emergency HVAC is the clearest version of this problem in any trade. Nobody with a dead furnace in January shops around. They call until a human — or something that sounds like one — picks up, and they book with that company.
You cannot answer while you are on a roof or in an attic. An owner-operator physically cannot be on the phone and under a unit at the same time, and the calls that come in while you are working are the ones paying for tomorrow.
Then there is the surge. The first hot week of the year, the first hard freeze — the phone does not ring steadily, it rings all at once, and there is no amount of hustle that answers forty calls in an afternoon.
What it does for hvac
It sorts emergency from maintenance
No heat, no cooling, a smell of gas, water where water should not be — those are flagged to you immediately. A filter change books itself.
It gets what you need to decide
Address, what the system is doing, roughly how old it is, whether anyone is in the house. Enough for you to decide which call is worth driving to first.
It holds the line during a surge
It answers all of them at once. Nobody sits on hold and nobody hangs up on a busy tone during the week that makes your year.
Worth saying out loud
What it will not do
Every one of these is a place where being confidently wrong costs you more than saying “let me have someone call you back.” So it says that instead.
- It will not diagnose a fault or guess at a repair cost. It gathers, it does not estimate.
- It will not commit you to an arrival time. It says somebody will call straight back, and you decide the schedule.
- It will not talk anyone through a gas smell. That goes to you, and to the gas company, immediately.
